A few years ago, I vowed to nix artificial sweeteners from my diet. Fake sugars, as I like to call them, just never sat well with me. I couldn't digest them and they often made me quite ill.
I know there are a quite a few health concerns with using sugar substitutes, and even though I'm pretty sure they blame anything on cancer these days, I wasn't always concerned with the side effects until I started to notice a significant difference when I didn't use them.
I won't lie. I still liked the fact of using a zero calorie sugar substitute to replace sugar. To me, sugar just seemed like empty calories and I had a hard time using the "real" thing.
About the time when I cut out splenda, I was introduced to an alternative by my manager of a coffee shop where I worked at the time. Stevia he called it. We offered this to add to some of our drinks and I became interested in learning just what it was all about.
Stevia is a genus of about 240 species of herbs and shrubs in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), native to subtropical and tropical regions from western North America to South America. The species Stevia rebaudiana, commonly known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf, or simply stevia, is widely grown for its sweet leaves. As a sweetener and sugar substitute, stevia's taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar, although some of its extracts may have a bitter or licorice-like aftertaste at high concentrations.
