Unordinary Flavors Extraordinary Taste

There is no denying it, I LOVE breakfast.  Considering the copious amounts of fruits and vegetables I eat on a daily basis, it's only natural to assume that the one meal that allows me to eat the most of it would be my favorite.

I recently received an email from a reader who asked me to post my breakfast bowls in detail.

Gladly!

Let's start it off with one of my favorites……

Vanilla Spiced Pear with Blackberries

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 Cup Kashi Go Lean
  • 1/4 Cup Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Wheat
  • 1 small pear, diced
  • 2 TBL Chunky Natural Applesauce
  • 2 TBL Vanilla Chobani
  • Blackberries
  • 1 tsp cinnamon raisin peanut butter
  • cinnamon, flax, and granola sprinkle on top
Directions:

Place the diced pear, cereals and applesauce in a bowl.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and microwave for one minute.  Add the yogurt, berries, peanut butter and lastly sprinkle with flax and granola.

That's it!  Simple right?

I think my breakfast bowls only look more elaborate than they really are.

I always have to have something to pick at on the side.  Today it was 1/2 a grapefruit and 3 strawberries. Of course, Iced Coffee is a staple these days.

I'll try to post more of these in detail from now on.  Trust me, so long as you have an appreciation for good fresh fruits and an open mind, you will come up with some of the most delicious, well-balanced breakfasts that fuel you completely throughout the morning.  I've said this before, but honestly, these bowls keep me full for more than 5 hours!!!!  Such an incredible balance of all essential nutrients is key and I really try to make breakfast my best and healthiest meal of the day.

I was also asked what all goes into my salads.

Well, this one is a bit more complicated to answer because truth be told, I'm a bit of a free spirit when it comes to salads.  I can put just about anything and everything into a big bowl and call it a salad.  I think the key is to load up on veggies and then add as many different flavors and textures that you can think of. So many people think that eating a salad will not fill them up and leave them hungry an hour later.  Trust me, after I eat my salads, I'm stuffed to the brim. VARIETY is golden when it comes to making a salad that will keep you full and nourished.  You need carbs, protein, healthy fats, and soluble fiber.

Today's Salad:
  • Romaine and Cabbage
  • Sprouts
  • Cucumber
  • Red Onion
  • Radish
  • Leftover grilled squash
  • Tomato
  • Pickles
  • Smoked Salmon
  • Capers
  • Crumbled LC blue cheese wedge
  • Balsamic and honey mustard (for the dressing)
I also made a fantastic green smoothie to go with my salad.

  • 1/2 Frozen Banana
  • 3 Frozen Strawberries
  • Fresh Pineapple and it's juice
  • 2 TBL Pineapple Greek Yogurt
  • Splash of OJ
  • Spinach
  • Chia and Hemp Protein (1 tsp of each)
This is my favorite protein powder!

Lunch was awesome and so filling.  Ha, my salads are no joke!

Not only do I love breakfast in the morning, I love it so much I make it for dinner once a week.  If you are new to the blog, you will quickly see that I honor ever Wednesday with BFD (Breakfast for Dinner).  It's a staple and much anticipated event in our home.

Egg Sammies tonight!

This was a good one so pay attention….

  • 2 slices Ezikle Cinnamon Raisin Bread
  • 1 tsp fresh peach jam
  • 1 tsp dijon
  • spinach
  • fresh peach slices
  • farm fresh egg (poke and scramble method)
  • goat cheese
If there are egg sammies in heaven, I imagine they would taste something like this…

Served with Butternut Squash home fries

Toly had his old faithful and all time favorite.  Egg Cheese Bacon and Tomato

With double home fries (boy loves his potatoes)

So there you have it. Yes, my cooking may be unordinary, but I assure you it's extraordinary.  Even Toly, who has not always been the most adventurous eater, has opened his mind to the beauty of incorporating eccentric ingredients to some of the most flavorful and best food combinations one can dream of.

What is one of the most unusual food combinations that you love? I think almost all of my food combinations are unusual but some of my favorite include almond butter, spinach and pear sammies on cinnamon raisin english muffins.  Sounds odd but it's outstanding!  Almond Butter and Sweet Potato, Hummus and Cottage Cheese, Mac and Cheese with ketchup…..I could go on forever.

  4. I never understood why people think salads won't fill them up...I avoid it because it fills me up too much! It's probably because their salads are all veggies and no fat, carbs, or protein. Or not much, anyway.

My favorite weird combo: cream cheese and toasted nori in curry! SO good!

  5. Ohh that bfast and egg sammie looks SO good. The salad is not my style, but it sure looks healthy! I'm pretty conventional with my eating, so I don't have any fun combos to share :/ I do loving putting Frank's Hot Sauce on pretty much everything I eat though!
